Social Services & Counseling

Youth First Texas is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a safe space for LGBTQ youth and their allied friends to strengthen opportunities for life skills, leadership development, peer support and educational advancement.  While Youth First Texas is not a counseling, therapy, crisis or mental health referral agency, the organization recognizes the need among LGBTQ youth for access to mental health services providers and health care services providers who are sensitive to LGBTQ issues.

If you are currently having thoughts of suicide, cutting or other self-harm, please contact one of the following crisis centers for help:

Individual Counseling & Therapy

YFT offers free counseling to LGBTQ youth ages 22 and younger through mental health services providers who offer their services at the center free of charge.  All providers are licensed mental health services providers or student interns working under the supervision of a licensed supervisor in their respective mental health specialty.  Providers follow all legal and ethical guidelines including confidentiality and keeping files.  Youth under 18 years old will need written consent from their parent(s)/guardian(s) before receiving individual services.  Some issues that may be addressed include, but are not limited to: coming out, family issues, bullying, school issues, self mutilation, depression, isolation, dating/relationships, gender identity/expression, drug and alcohol abuse, etc.  If you are interested in finding out more about individual counseling/therapy or setting up an appointment for an intake assessment please contact

Support Groups

Support groups are necessary when working with youth. While volunteers are always ready and available to help youth in any way possible, sometimes a person just needs to know that someone is going through the same issue that they are. Because of this, support groups are vital part of Youth First Texas.  Our three primary support groups are listed below and may be supplemented from time to time with other support groups as the need arises.  For more information on any of the support groups please contact

Survivors’ Group
This peer support group is for youth who have suffered from isolation, abuse or other trauma where members can talk about things that are troubling them and receive feedback from peers in a facilitated, confidential and safe setting. Held on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 7:45 – 8:45 PM.

Gender Identity Group
This support group is for youth dealing with issues related to gender identity (e.g. transgender) and gender expression (e.g. genderqueer). The group is also open to youth who are curious about what gender identity is or what their transgender friends are dealing with. Held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 7:45 – 8:45 PM.

Coming Out Group
Thoughts and feelings about sexuality and the possibility of coming out can feel challenging, confusing, and possibly even exhilarating. Youth First Texas periodically offers a 4-week support group, providing an opportunity to share with a small group of peers about sexuality and the coming out journey in a confidential setting.
